Wildflower Area on Recreation Ground

Published: 18 March 2021

If you have been to the Recreation Ground recently you may have noticed some work being done around the Tennis Courts.

After years of little/no maintenance, the Longstanton Village Hall and Recreation Ground Charity listened to residents comments asking for more wildflowers in the village.   The stretch from the containers (on the hedgerow) all the way down the side of the tennis courts and around the back to the bowls green has been worked on.

Work completed includes:

  • the hedgerows cut back,
  • dead wood removed (more hedging plants to be planted to fill out),
  • rubbish removed,
  • the ground has been prepared, and
  • wildflower and grass seed sown.

A large mound has been created in the corner to provide a habitat for invertebrates, etc. reusing the old soil mound left on the Recreation Ground.

So please watch this space grow into a beautiful, colourful habitat for butterflies and bees.
